BUFFALO - Most spectators may not have noticed, but the Altoona-Midway High School football team got better this week.

That was the takeaway from AMHS head coach Sean Price, who saw his Jet gridders drop a 47-0 decision to Marais Des Cygnes Valley in a Kansas 6-Man, District 1 matchup held at Frank Kennedy Field.

“People will look at the score and say we didn't play well, but the truth of the matter is we played much better tonight than we did last week (a 56-12 loss to Chetopa in the season-opener),” Price said. “We’re a very young team, and that is one of our goals - to improve each week.”

The inexperienced Jet squad was no match for the visitors, as MDCV bolted to 28-0 lead after one period. The Trojans tacked on another 19 points to make it 47-0 by halftime, when the game was called due to the mercy rule.

Still, Price found positives with his squad.

“Defensively we are so close, and we improved so much in just a week,” Price noted. “We did force three 4-and-outs against a very good team.

“Offensively we also made some great strides,” he added. “Beau Clines showed improvement on his decision-making and ran the ball well. Chance Carter is a very consistent player for us and continues to make plays when we need him. Zach Good rushed the ball well again and broke some very nice runs.”

Good picked up 65 yards on 12 carries to lead the Jet offense, while Clines rushed two times for 20 yards. Clines was 5-for-14 and 54 yards in the air. Good had one reception for 20 yards, while Chance Mustain and Chance Carter caught two passes apiece for 15 and 19 yards, respectively.

On the defensive side of the ball, Carter topped the charts with four total tackles, while Good, Mustain, Clines and Caden Sicka were credited with two apiece, and Payton Baird assisted on one stop. Both Carter and Clines registered tackles for losses.

“As a coach, all we can ask of our players is to play the hardest they can play … and that happened Friday night,” Price said. “The team gave a great effort, fought and believed in one another, and that is a positive thing for our young team.”

Altoona-Midway (0-2) will try to get on the winning side of the ledger Thursday, Sept. 17, when they hit the road to Lost Springs for another 6-Man, District 1 tilt with Centre High School.

Centre is 1-1 on the season. The Cougars are fresh off of a 47-0 shutout against Southern Coffey County. The non-conference game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
