LOST SPRINGS - The Altoona-Midway High School football team made the long trek here Thursday, and returned home after suffering a 55-7 loss at the hands of Centre High School.

The Cougars (2-1) took control of the Kansas 6-Man, District 1 contest early, posting a 35-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, then outscoring the Jets 20-7 in the second period.

The game was called at halftime due to the mercy rule.

“We really came out flat tonight, and that is something that I as a coach have to do a better job in preparing them,” said Altoona-Midway head coach Sean Price.

“When we executed our game plan defensively, we looked really good, but we’re still just too inconsistent to play an entire game,” Price continued. “I really like our kids, but we have got to find some success in order to move forward.”

The Jets only touchdown of the evening came in the second quarter, when freshman quarterback Beau Clines connected with junior Chance Mustain on a 14-yard aerial strike.

The scoring play was one of just three pass completions on the night for Altoona-Midway, good for a combined 38 yards. Chance Carter and Zack Good had the other receptions for AMHS, covering 15 and nine yards, respectively.

The Jets were also held to just 13 total yards on the ground by the rugged Cougar defense. Good rushed 13 times for 18 yards, while Clines was sacked once for a 5-yard loss.

On defense, Caden Sicka had three solo tackles, while Carter and Broghan Douglas each had two solo stops and one assist. Good and Mustain were credited with one solo tackle apiece.

Carter also had one tackle-for-loss, and came away with an interception for the Jets.

“Chance Carter and Caden Sicka had good games defensively, and freshman Broghan Douglas has really stepped up for us,” Price said. “I’m proud of the effort put forth by all of the kids.”

Altoona-Midway (0-3) will try to get on the winning track Thursday, Sept. 24, when they play host to the Chetopa Hornets. It will be a rematch of the season opener, in which the Hornets stormed to a 56-12 victory.

In the first meeting, Chetopa pounded out 389 yards on the ground. Harrison Carter picked up 180 rushing yards and totaled five TDs in the victory.

The Hornets have continued their winning ways and bring an unblemished 3-0 mark into Thursday’s matchup. Chetopa is fresh off a 52-19 win over Southern Coffey County.

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Frank Kennedy Field.
