BUFFALO - For the second time this season, the Chetopa Hornets came out on top in a Three Rivers League 6-Man battle with the Altoona-Midway Jets.
Chetopa’s offense was too much for AMHS to handle, as the Hornets posted a 65-19 victory in a rematch between Kansas 6-Man, District 1 opponents.
Chetopa also registered a 56-12 win in a season-opener matchup.
“Despite the loss, I felt like we took a step forward in a lot of aspects tonight,” said Altoona-Midway head coach Sean Price. “Beau Clines really threw the ball much better, and Broghan Douglas, Caden Sicka and Chance Carter all came down with some nice catches and scores for us. Also, I thought we tried to play much more physical as a team.”
But despite those improvements, the Jets were still eventually overmatched against a talented Chetopa offense. Altoona-Midway played tough early and trailed just 14-6 after one period.
But the Hornets increased their advantage to 30-6 at halftime, and the margin was 44-12 after three quarters. Chetopa then enjoyed a 21-7 spread in the final stanza to create the 65-19 final, giving the Hornets their fourth victory in as many starts on the year.
“When we play physical, disciplined football, we play really great defense,” Price said. But we had way too many missed tackles tonight, and we got ourselves into the wrong position and hurt ourselves by not doing our job.
“On the bright side, Zach Good and Beau Clines played much better on defense, and Chance Mustain came in and played very physical on the backend.”
Carter had three receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown. Sicka and Douglas each added aerial TDs and two receptions each, with Douglas collecting 60 yards and Sicka 23.
Clines passed for all 161 yards and all three scores. But the Jets were able to muster just 42 yards on the ground, all by Zach Good.
Good registered 13 tackles, including 10 solo stops, while Clines had nine solo and 10 total tackles. Carter totaled six tackles for the Jets, Payton Baird three, Douglas two, and Mustain, Sicka, and Karter Letterman one each. Mustain also recovered a fumble, and Clines notched a sack.
“All in all, I feel this was a positive step forward for us,” Price said. “We must learn to play a full game of disciplined football and we will be a very good team then.”
Altoona-Midway, now 0-4 on the year, will hit the road on Friday, Oct. 2, to face Peabody-Burns (3-1), which is fresh off a 46-0 shutout of Southern Coffey County.
