Jets’ offensive outburst not quite enough - Titans outscore Jets 66-54
LEROY - The Altoona-Midway High School Jets enjoyed an offensive explosion here Friday night, but it still wasn’t enough to put them in the winner’s circle.
In a Three Rivers League gridiron battle full of offensive fireworks, the Southern Coffey County Titans outlasted Altoona-Midway 66-54 in an exciting Kansas Six-Man, District 1 contest.
It marked the first win of the year for Southern Coffey County (1-6). With an open date this week, AMHS closed out regular season play with an 0-7 mark, but not before earning some heartfelt praise from Jets head coach Sean Price.
“Our players played their hearts out Friday night,” Price said. “When we line up properly on defense, and when we block the right person on offense - we are unstoppable. But, our youth shows through at times and it hurts us.
“But overall, I am really proud of the progress our young kids have made this year,” Price continued. “We are so young and inexperienced at several key places but they have gotten great experience and are better for it.”
The 54-point performance marked Altoona-Midway’s largest offensive production in more than two calendar years, when the Jets stormed to a 62-46 win over Chetopa on Oct. 11, 2024.
In a see-saw battle throughout the first half, AMHS held the upper hand on three different occasions, all coming after a trio of touchdowns by sophomore Zach Good.
The Jets led 7-6 and 14-12 after TD runs from Good of 13 and 5 yards, respectively, and also led 20-19 when Good hauled in a 30-yard aerial toss from freshman quarterback Beau Clines.
However, Southern Coffey County scored again before the half to take a 25-20 lead into intermission.
Altoona-Midway enjoyed its final lead of the night early in the second half when Clines found junior Chance Carter on a 28-yard TD pass. It was the first of what would end up being three scoring plays through the air for that duo and gave the Jets a 27-25 advantage.
Unfortunately, the Titans responded with 21 unanswered points to go in front 46-27.
Good took the ensuing kickoff and raced 72 yards for his fourth touchdown of the night to pull the Jets within 46-33. But the squads alternated scoring plays on six TDs for the remainder of the evening, allowing SCC to escape with the 66-54 triumph.
AMHS enjoyed an aerial outburst for their final three touchdowns. After Clines connected with sophomore Karter Letterman for a 50-yard strike, he found Carter for a pair of TD passes covering 10 and 70 yards, but the Jets came up short.
“It was a back-and-forth game through halftime, and we had the lead for a short time in the second half,” Price said, “but costly mistakes put us too far behind to come back from. But like I said, I am very proud of this group of young men. They gave it everything they had.”
Altoona-Midway’s aerial attack was in full force Friday night, as the Jets finished with 10 completions for 272 yards and five touchdowns on the night. Carter was the favorite target of Clines, hauling in four catches - three for touchdowns - and 133 total yards.
Letterman finished with two receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown, Chance Mustain had two catches for 39 yards, and Good also had a pair of receptions for 30 yards and one TD.
Good also piled up 127 yards on the ground on 22 rushing attempts. Good recorded four touchdowns on the night - two on the ground, one in the air, as well as a kickoff return to the house.
Carter also enjoyed a tremendous defensive game, earning 10 solo tackles including a whopping six tackles for loss. Clines and Mustain were credited with eight and seven stops, respectively, while Good notched five total tackles.
Rounding out the defensive stats were Broghan Douglas, Hunter Reaves, and Hyden Buchanan with three tackles apiece. Douglas also had a pass deflection.
With an open date this week, Altoona-Midway will set its sights on preparing for the Kansas 6-Man playoffs the following week. AMHS will likely draw the runner-up school from District 2, which tentatively would pit them against Otis-Bison (6-1). However, official postseason brackets will not be announced until after this week’s games.
