Not only was the Altoona-Midway football team a Band of Brothers this year … so was the Jet coaching staff.
Literally.
The Almond Brothers—Jeff and Randy, not the music group… served as co-coaches for the AMHS grid squad this fall. While the results on the field were a mixed bag of wins and losses, I have no doubt the Jet players received a championship supply of encouragement, inspiration, and positive reinforcement.
Because coaching sports is so much more than just fundamentals and competing to win games.
The most important job of a coach is to develop and foster a team culture of integrity. Creating a culture of effort, positivity and character transcends winning or individual achievement – it builds the foundation for turning players into trustworthy, honorable citizens.
I am blessed to know both Jeff and Randy … and without a doubt, I am certain that was the focus of both these fine gentlemen throughout the year.
I hope the Jet players, their families, and the Altoona-Midway community – all realize how fortunate they are to have such caring individuals in charge of their teenagers. What’s more, it seems the coaches for all AM sports excel at developing the person as well as the athlete. Unfortunately, such is not universally true in high school sports.
Both Randy and Jeff said it was definitely a thrill to be able to coach with their brother.
“I was very proud of all of my boys. They played hard and grew together as a team, and as a family,” said Randy, who previously announced this would be his final season as coach. “I enjoyed coaching these young men … and getting to coach with my brother was the icing on the cake.”
“This is Randy’s last season unless I can get him to change his mind,” Jeff told me. “We just had a fun time together coaching the boys. It’s pretty special to coach with your brother.”
But when approached about a possible story about two brothers coaching together, both of the Almonds quickly declined.
“It’s not about us. It’s about the kids, not the coaches,” they both declared.
True. But their steadfast focus on what’s best for the kids … is exactly why they also deserve some recognition.
Hats off to both of you, Randy and Jeff. I’m proud to call you friends.
